  • Implosion, disassembly and recycling of the structure

The process of demolition and recycling at the Lago Norte shopping mall in Brasilia used implosion techniques and further selective demolition techniques (reverse building). Thirty-six thousand cubic meters of reinforced concrete of the Lago Norte shopping mall old structure were processed and removed to make room to the current Iguatemi Shopping.

The execution method involved maximizing the recycling process as residues were generated. Residues were sorted by classes (A, B, C and D), as provided for in the CONAMA Resolution 307. Residues were taken to a sorting and transfer  area where the recyclable materials (Classes A and B) could be separated from non-recyclable residues (Classes C and D) that were disposed in licensed areas.

The use of mobile crushing equipment allowed the on-site processing of Class A residues to produce recycled aggregates with mean diameter of 40 mm, and sand. The process was performed in line with the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) rules to obtain recycled aggregates. These aggregates met the requirements to be used as baseline and sub-baseline material in paving works and/or as concrete aggregate for use with no structural function.
